Per-app volume control for your Mac.

macOS gives you one volume slider for everything. TuningMac adds a volume mixer to the menu bar, like the one on Windows: every app that plays sound gets its own slider and mute button.

A volume mixer for macOS

Music too loud during a call? Notification sounds blasting over a movie? With a single system volume you have to choose. With per-app volume you don't.

  • Keep Spotify at a comfortable background level while Zoom stays clear.
  • Turn Slack and Mail pings down without missing them completely.
  • Mute a game or a noisy website with one click, while everything else keeps playing.

How the mixer works

Open TuningMac from the menu bar and the Apps section lists everything playing sound, with its icon, a slider and its level in percent. Click an app's icon to mute it, or right-click to reset it to 100%.

Levels are remembered per app and applied the next time it plays. Browser helper processes are grouped under their browser, so Chrome or Safari shows up as one row instead of several.

More than a volume mixer

The same menu bar popover also switches your output and microphone, adds a system-wide equalizer with presets, plays sound through several speakers or headphones at once and controls noise cancelling on supported AirPods, Sony and realme or OPPO headphones. One small app instead of four.

Set it up in a minute

  1. 1

    Download TuningMac

Get it from tuningmac.com and drag it to Applications. It runs on macOS 14.2 Sonoma or later.

  2. 2

    Allow audio access

macOS asks once for System Audio Recording, which lets TuningMac set each app's level. Nothing is recorded.

  3. 3

    Set your levels

Play something, open the menu bar popover and drag each app's slider. Click an icon to mute that app.

Questions

Does macOS have a volume mixer?+

No. macOS has a single volume level for everything. You can't turn one app down while keeping another loud without a separate app. TuningMac adds a per-app volume mixer to the menu bar.

How do I change the volume of one app on a Mac?+

Open TuningMac from the menu bar. Every app that's playing sound appears in the Apps section with its own slider. Drag it to set that app's level, or click the app's icon to mute it.

Does TuningMac remember each app's volume?+

Yes. Each app's level and mute are saved, and applied again the next time that app plays sound.

Can I control the volume of individual browser tabs?+

No. Volume is set per app, so all tabs in Chrome or Safari share one slider. TuningMac groups each browser's helper processes under the browser, so you only see one row for it.

Can I make an app louder than 100%?+

No. Each app's slider goes from muted to 100% of the system volume, so you turn the other apps down rather than pushing one above full volume.

Do I need to install an audio driver?+

No. TuningMac uses Apple's own system audio tap (macOS 14.2 and later), so there is no driver, kernel extension or virtual device.
